I've voiced my opinions on Tanuki and its associated Tumblr several times. (They've never been very complimentary). Unfortunately, there is no way to block the pesky thing from showing up in the Alice Nine and GazettE tags when surfing Tumblr through the iPhone app (my usual method). I usually see the logo and scroll right past. (For the uninitiated, Tanuki is a board on 2-chan, the Japanese board that inspired 4-chan, where alleged Japanese groupies post their alleged accounts of having allegedly slept with various VK musicians. Personally, I've always suspected it's drunken musicians posting crap about their bandmates as a prank.)

Last night, though, something caught my eye - and that something was a major crossing of the line.


I'd noticed some chatter in the Alice Nine tag about Tora's *cough* male features. The man has long been rumored to be *cough* sizable. Well, it seems that a Tanuki poster took a picture of what was allegedly said *cough* anatomical feature and uploaded it. She then deleted it - but a thumbnail view was left behind. Which the Western Tanuki Tumblr quickly grabbed and posted all over their blog.

Now, it's possible - indeed, probable - that this was a prank or "LOOK AT MEEEEE!" stunt pulled by two consenting parties - a Japanese woman and her boyfriend, or two of the aforementioned drunken J-rockers. (Hey, maybe it really is Tora). But if it was actually uploaded without the subject's knowledge or consent? No. Just NO. That's just wrong, no matter WHO it is. Here in America, that would mean a lawsuit. (Of course, here in America, spilled hot coffee is a lawsuit, but hey).

Which brings up issue #2 - the need for Tumbr to have an equivalent of the LJ Cut. Dude, I surf the Gaze and Alice Nine tags while on line at the supermarket. I don't want the elderly lady behind me with the six huge bags of cat food in her cart getting an eyeful of *cough* anatomical features.

Hopefully, this is an isolated incident - but sadly, I doubt it.

there's actually a feature similar to the lj cut, but people don't seem to know how to use it. it's the read more-button and when used, it works wonderfully. sadly, not enough people use this and i agree, it would be reaaaaally nice if they did.

Yeah, if Tumblr was smart, they would perfect the use of the Read-More across all their platforms (web, ioS app, Android app, etc.) and then loudly remind people of its availability - especially when it comes to NSFW material. It's one area where LJ does have an edge over Tumblr - making people opt into seeing that stuff.

And yeah, Tumblr's read more cut is so hard to use. I've tried! And it failed miserably, several times, until I just gave up. No idea why the code kept going wonky, either. So I understand why people don't use it much.

But even with a cut of some sort being easier to use, I doubt the tanuki blog would use it. Doesn't seem to be their style. ;)

They probably wouldn't. Disrespectful is definitely the word - if the American blog had any taste, rather than waving the picture in people's faces, they should have explained what was going on and then said, "Here's a link to the picture if you want to see it, definitely NSFW." (However, I do realize I'm putting the concepts "taste" and "Tanuki" in the same sentence).

The hilarious thing about this is people were saying yesterday on the Alice Nine tag, "Why aren't more people flipping out over this?" and getting replies saying, "Dude, nearly everyone who accesses Tumblr through the web has Tanuki blocked."

Gosh I couldn't agree with you more.
I avoid tanuki like the plague and I wish it would just get shut down.
Porn is one thing. Gossip and posting shit like that is just sad.
Also just straight-up WRONG (because, doubtfully posted with consent)...

Yes, thank you - there is a HUGE difference between real person fanfiction, which is labeled as fiction, and gossip pretending to be fact like Tanuki. I wish more anti-RPS people would realize that.

I actually haven't seen anyone freaking out over "He has male parts!" - I did see a bit of initial "OMG!" flurry over it, but yesterday on the Alice Nine tag, I saw more of, "Why aren't more people flipping out over this?" (The replies said it's because just about everyone who accesses Tumblr through the web has Tanuki blocked).

The worst part of the whole thing is the dubious consent. If it really is Tora, I doubt very highly he'd consent to having that picture taken and uploaded. If it's some attention-starved girl uploading her boyfriend's picture without his knowledge and passing it off as Tora - well, that's even WORSE, because it's betraying her boyfrien's trust.

While I personally don't like Tanuki that much, I have to say that I know for a fact that band men don't give a flying shit about what is posted there, as long as they are not recogized from the pictures. And if they are in a situation where someone is taking a picture of their thingy, I assume they are okay with that too. As long as their face is not shown.

Also, even grown ups here in Japan are extremely childish, I know band men post on Tanuki themselves too and they think it's fun.

Anyway, most people know Tanuki is indeed a GOSSIP site and almost nothing is 100% sure. I just wish people don't get too upset over this, because it really isn't a big deal. It's better to laugh than cry.

And I really find it funny when 20 girls write how mister X acts in bed and everyone says different things. I think that kinda shows how reliable site it is ;D

Ha, you confirmed my theory that Tanuki is full of J-rockers posting about their bandmates. The 20 different girls posting 20 different things about the same guy double-confirms it! Actually, I'm wondering if some of these "groupies" get duped by guys who look a little like a J-rocker - "Oh, yeah, I'm totally him, I just look different without the makeup" - and then post on Tanuki thinking he was the real deal. It's definitely to be taken with a major grain of salt.

I personally think that the reason the fandom wasn't flipping over that thing is because we're all tired of tanuki's bullshit. ( i doubt a lot of people blocked the tanuki blog but after this incident i can see a lot people blocking it now) The first time tanuki posted something in the tag, it basically broke the fandom. The alice nine fandom is known as the kind to everyone/loves everyone kind of people but then when tanuki happened, the image got ruined. I myself don't want the fandom having problems just because of some stupid gossip this tanuki blog is posting. It's so wrong in so many ways. Plus, I know she's having fun posting these and seeing the reactions from it and that's just plain rude.

God, when will this tanuki blog stop.

I heard that the mod of the Tanuki tumblr was BRAGGING about the chaos she'd unleashed in the Alice Nine fandom. Granted, the very existence of that blog was trollish to begin with, but that is . . . well, triple-troll. Unfortunately, I don't think she's going to stop unless Tumblr shuts her down - which very well might happen if PSC gets wind of the alleged "dick pic" being posted overseas. (The real Tanuki is untraceable, a North American Tumblr is not .. .)
