I've been watching the Olympics these last couple of weeks. (For those outside the U.S., yes, our TV coverage is as made of phail as you might have heard it is. It's tape-delayed events shown hours after they happen, put together with whiplash editing - BOBSLED! SNOWBOARDING! FIGURE SKATING! BACK TO BOBSLED! BACK TO SKATING! - and you usually see nobody but the Americans and the medal contenders). Things got a lot more interesting when the ladies' figure skating championship came to an end and an unknown Russian skater ended up defeating defending champion Yuna Kim, leading to an explosion of controversy online - accusations of cheating, vote-fixing, etc. Reading the Yuna Kim tag on Tumblr has been an eye-opener - I didn't realize she had such a passionately devoted global following (it seems she's a model and a K-pop singer in addition to being a skater). Needless to say, her fans reacted to the judging with flat-out rage. There's a petition on Change.org to investigate the judging that has nearly two million signatures. I doubt they're going to succeed in getting the judging overturned, but following the effort has been fascinating. (But yikes, the Russia hate demonstrated by some of the fans! Don't hate on the skater or her countrymen for this, people, hate on the corruption in the sport).
Last night, I also saw part of the Adult Video Association Awards on Showtime - the porn industry's version of the Oscars. It was . . . well, I did get some ideas from it for the Camera Eye series. A lot of it was too over-the-top - yes, we know you're giving awards for porn, stop making the constant jokes about dicks (most of which weren't funny). But some of the award categories were most interesting, including Best Romance Video - it seems that really is A Thing in the industry and it really is targeted at people who normally don't watch teh pr0nz. And it seems they actually give an award for Best Oral Performance. Oh, yes, there is fic potential in that one . . .
(Also, the cover art of Alice Nine's upcoming Supernova is WTF enough that there might be a fic in that, too).

Date: 2014-02-23 11:56 am (UTC)Supernova cover is actually pretty nice. it's like part two of 9's cover or something like that. Plus, it's a relief that it actually looks decent rather than looking like Shining's what-the-fuck-is-this cover.
