Summary: Years after a catastrophic deluge that covered nearly all of the Earth’s surface with water, more than half the human race has evolved into merfolk and are living in undersea kingdoms. The remaining people are living on what little dry land is left, scraping out a living as fishermen. The two worlds remain separate, until a not-so-little merfolk prince sees a beautiful young man on a boat, and wants to be part of his world.
Comments: Written for the uruai Summer Vacation Writing Challenge. My prompt (which, admittedly, I’ve interpreted rather freely) was as follows: Your theme is post apocalypse AU bandfic. Let yourself inspired by your prompt picture and imagine the boys in this world. How would this world work? How would the Gaze boys work inside it? How will this world find Kai and Uruha? The appearance of the Deepers toward the end of the fic, by the way, was inspired by SCREW’s Deep Six PV.

It. Is. FINALLY. Done.

My fic for the uruai summer challenge is posted. (Well, at least I tried to post it. It went on my own journal okay, but I'm getting moderation submission messages for communities that usually aren't moderated, like uruai itself). It's the third time I've desecrated a Disney film - this one has its roots in The Little Mermaid, while I'd done fics based on Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland (co-written with aleksiina_26) before. It's also the longest J-rock fic I've ever written - 18k words plus.

I learned a lot of interesting things about The Little Mermaid (original story and film) while doing background research for the fic:

1. Walt Disney himself had come up with a version of Little Mermaid that was supposed to be used in a Fantasia sequel that was scrapped. When the neo-Disney team was preparing the 1989 film, they found Uncle Walt's treatment and found it to be very close to their own script - which meant they were dong something right!
2. Ursula was originally supposed to be voiced by Bea Arthur, but she had to drop out because she was too busy with Golden Girls.
3. The original story doesn't end with the mermaid dying, as many people think. Instead, she's given a second shot at being human by becoming a "daughter of the air" - a sort of fairy who helps children. If she does enough good deeds, she'll win the human soul she seeks. (The name Ariel might refer to this - the mermaid was nameless in Andersen's original).
4. Ariel was modeled after Alyssa Milano, then on Who's the Boss.
5. Sebastian was originally supposed to be an English butler crab. The songwriters convinced the producers to make him Jamaican instead so they could use calypso music on the soundtrack.
6. Some people think Andersen wrote the story because he was in love with a man he couldn't have, Edvard Collin. It appeared around the time of Collin's engagement to a young woman (remember, in the original story, the mermaid loses the prince when he marries someone else).
7. The original Danish title of the story is Den Lille Havfrue, literally "The Little Sea Lady." In Japanese, it is called Ningyo Hime, or Mermaid Princess. It's been the basis of several anime and manga, including a feature film called Andersen's Mermaid and the series Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch.

Yep, it's amazing what you pick up when you're looking for creative ways to get two gorgeous men in bed together. ~_^

So, yeah, that's done. I still need to do my kai_pleasure challenge fic, finish off my bingo line on Penisy Kinks Bingo, and .  . . well, there's the small matter of a certain kinky bastard who turned up this week in a very ficworthy leather bunny bondage outfit . . .
