He's stuck in a horrible situation, really. Unlike his sons, he felt like he had to follow "traditional" expectations for a royal. And really, the main thing that kept them from going down the same path - and their cousin as well - was they attended that boarding school with a more broad-based student body than their father thought was there. And thus the father sees his sons living the life they want, and he lashes out at all of their significant others - because of his frustration that his sons had the guts to do what he didn't. If he'd married Emi, and Mahiro, Yo-ka and Toya had ALL been their sons, Yuuki wouldn't be a "cabaret singer" and Subaru and Kouki wouldn't be "guttersnipes" - in fact, Yo-ka might not have been forced to have a Culling at all. (Which would have meant that Toya would never have met Subaru, so maybe it's for the best things worked out the way they did!)
